Fili, Heir of Durin

Description

I loved Fili's solemn and contemplative posture on the original photo since I first saw it when it was released online. For me it expresses both the more intense reflection on his role as the Heir of Durin as well as the foreshadowing of a darker and more serious next chapter of his life - which he might not yet be able to grasp but maybe already feel.

This time I explored the traditional path of drawing - hadn't done this for quite a time - and tried to work with ink, brush and paper because I wanted to achieve the granularity of an almost dry brush on real paper (which is - to date - for me impossible to reproduce with my tablet in Photoshop).
I used "Rohrer & Klingner Ausziehtusche" (= the ink), Winsor & Newton series 7 brushes in size 1 and 2 and Strathmore Bristol paper, sketching with pencil and graphite. After this, I inked the whole thing, but ended up working more like with water color than real ink. ;) Then I scanned it, corrected some flaws and enhanced contrast etc. So it's in fact "mixed media".

Thanks to CFGriffith (cfgriffith.deviantart.com) for very valuable tutorials on the basic art tools and on how to start with transfer and inking. My respect to her for mastering this technique, it's really not easy and needs a lot of practice. She shared the tutorials on her Facebook Page (recommended!): www.facebook.com/CFGriffithPro…

Oh. My. Gosh.
So much work!
And it looks wonderful, I love the hair especially, like it was carved in metal.
